You Can Wear This Table as a Skirt

It is a solution to the eternal shopper's dilemma: do you want to buy a table or a skirt? Hussein Chalayan offers Afterwords, a series of furniture designs that you can wear. It's an expression of the experience of refugees who fled their homes quickly and thus carried essential household objects with them. The wooden rings cascade out to form a shapely hoop skirt.

It looks easy to put on, as this video shows.

9 Signs Cats Are Plotting World Domination

It’s no secret that cats are biding their time, waiting for just the right moment to take over. However, the fact that we are onto their machinations makes them no less adorable. Cole and Marmalade don’t even bother to hide their intentions.

Couple Welcomes Their 100th Grandchild

(Photo: Phil Carson)

I bet that Leo and Ruth Zanger of Quincy, Illinois have to send a lot of birthday cards! The couple has had 12 children during their 59 years of marriage. Those children have, so far, given them 53 grandchildren. Those 53 grandchildren have given them 46 great-grandchildren. One of those great-grandchildren gave them 1 great-great-granddaughter, which brings the total grandchildren up to a whopping 100!

Family get-togethers are a huge undertaking, but the family has gotten used to them. The Herald-Whig reports:

Most of the family lives in the immediate Quincy area. When they get together, it not only means renting out a church hall. It also involves about 50 pounds of ham or 10 turkeys.

The family has a well-honed routine for who supplies what and how often.

"Everyone takes their turn (in helping with food), and they all try and outdo each other," Donna said. "We are always getting together for something."

The unofficial "mandatory" get-togethers are Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day. And don't worry, there are plenty of other "excuses" for them to gather.

5 Obscure Looney Tunes Cartoons

Despite the popularity of Disney’s feature films the Looney Tunes beat Disney by a mile in the shorts department, because every self respecting toonhead grew up watching Looney Tunes shorts that were played on many different channels seemingly nonstop.

Over the years Warner Bros. has taken many shorts out of circulation for various reasons, ranging from violence to (seemingly) racist themes to what WB perceived as a lack of public interest, thereby denying future generations of these wonderful shorts.

This classic mental_floss article features 5 Obscure Looney Tunes Cartoons that weren't taken out of circulation because they're controversial, but rather because they're downright strange! Take a gander and see if they bring back any cartoon memories.

Behind the Scenes: Yoda and Jim Henson

According to Jim Henson: The Biography by Brian Jay Jones, George Lucas offered Muppets creator Jim Henson the role of Yoda. Henson declined, suspecting that he wouldn't have enough time for a project as ambitious as Star Wars. Puppeteer Frank Oz got the job instead. But Henson still consulted with the Star Wars crew in building the Yoda puppet. You can see more photos of him working on The Empire Strikes Back at The Making of Star Wars.

What It’s Actually Like To Buy A $500 House In Detroit

Over the past few years, you’ve probably heard about houses in Detroit selling for $10 and up. You’ve also seen pictures of houses that were abandoned during the ciry’s decline into bankruptcy. Now Detroit is slowly recovering, but you can still buy a house, even historic houses, for a pittance. It’s not a simple transaction. The public agencies that sell homes at auction for as little as $500 or $1,000 require you to pay property taxes, which may be years overdue, and you may be required to repair and live in it.

8. If you buy a house from the Detroit Land Bank, you have six months to get it up to code and occupied.

For historic homes you get nine months. Otherwise you risk losing the property and the money you paid for it. That means you’ll need to have the cash to fix up your fixer-upper ASAP. If you show a good-faith effort toward renovation, they will consider giving extensions, but they want legitimate landlords or homeowners, not absentee investors.

This rule is the biggest difference between the DLB and other auctions. “We’re trying to discount the speculators and the people just buying up properties and sitting on them to wait for them to go up in value,” Craig Fahle, director of public affairs for the Detroit Land Bank, told BuzzFeed Life. “We actually want someone to fix it up and rebuild the value of the neighborhood.”

This is a great deal for someone who is looking for a home instead of a property investment, if you are willing to put in the cash and the work. And people from Detroit will tell you that it’s a great place to live and getting better. Read the particulars about buying a house in Detroit at Buzzfeed.
